Our growing methods emphasize a healthy, fully-developed root system. Our young clematis are in sync with the seasons, enter full dormancy, harden off in winter and have fully developed root systems. This is the key to getting your clematis off to a good start.

Please keep in mind plants are not all equal. Each variety may vary in size, root development and growth rate. For spring and fall shipping, with the exception of the montana and atragene varieties, we prune the plants hard to help develop their roots and multi-stemming. If damage occurs to fragile stems during shipping, just prune below the damaged area. This is rarely fatal or serious. Initially, do not emphasize top growth too much. Your clematis has growth nodes under the soil and will grow quickly once its roots have settled in the ground. Clematis usually spend most of their first year establishing roots along with some growth and flowers. Expect moderate growth the second year. The third year - look out - you'll have a full-size specimen.
